HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

The Township’s first Household Hazardous Waste Event for 2010 was held on Saturday, May 15th.

Results of the amount of hazardous waste collected during that event.....

Waste Management & Recycling includes the administration of waste collection and disposal in addition to the administration of the recycling and hazardous waste collection programs. The Township has three landfill site within its boundaries - the former Ross Township Site at 990 Kohlsmith Road, the former Village of Cobden Site and the former Westmeath Township Site at 1597 Westmeath Road.

The only Landfill Site residents of the Township may use is the Ross Landfill Site located at 990 Kohlsmith Road. This site will be utilized as a long-term, centralized disposal facility to service the Whitewater Region

Landfill Site Hours are:
Wednesday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m

Waste collection services are presently being provided by Direct Express. Beaumen Waste Management Ltd. provides services with respect to the blue box collection.

 

GARBAGE COLLECTION INFORMATION

All residents of the Township of Whitewater Region will receive weekly curbside pick-up of their household garbage providing this garbage is placed in the specially marked yellow municipal (W) garbage bags. These garbage bags can be purchased for $3.00 each, at the following locations:
 
 

Freshmart, Beachburg Millar Feed & Seed, Cobden
Beach-West Pharmacy, Beachburg Municipal Office, Cobden
Beachburg Deli & Bakery, Beachburg Rooney's, Cobden
Annie's, Foresters Falls Cobden Freshmart, Cobden
Lacroix's Store, LaPasse Schauer's Hardware, Cobden
Kenny's Store, Westmeath Cobden Auto Supply, Cobden
Mullen's Esso, Pembroke  J.R.'s Country Store, Chenaux
   

The yellow (W) garbage bags should be placed at curbside on a publicly maintained road by 7:00 a.m. The bag must be unbroken, properly tied and shall not exceed 20 kg in weight. It may be placed inside a can or receptacle.

Yellow (W) garbage bags will be collected as per the following map. During a week in which a statutory holiday falls, all regularly scheduled pickups occurring after the statutory holiday will be one day later.

In order to preserve and extend the life of the Township's landfill sites, the Township offers bi-weekly pickup of recyclables. Blue boxes must be placed at curbside on a publicly maintained road by 7:00a.m.

Changes to Your Residential & Commercial Recycling Collection Contract July, 2011

The Township of Whitewater Region Residential & Commercial Recycling Collection Schedule will transition back to its original bi-weekly format as practiced prior to April 4th, 2011.

Changes that recently occurred to your collection schedule as a result of the Tender Process and resulting Contractual Agreement, will cease to apply as of Thursday, June 30th, 2011. The week of July 4th – 8th, 2011, please resort back to your former bi-weekly pick-up day, beginning with Monday collection of the former Village of Cobden and Village of Beachburg as well as the Friday collection of the former Township of Ross.  The following week (July 11th – 15th ) will reinstate the Thursday & Friday collection of the former Township of Westmeath.

Please be sure to place all recyclable materials (both paper recyclables as well as container recyclables) out at curb-side as practiced prior to April 4th, 2011 on your scheduled day of pick-up. Don’t forget to bundle your cardboard!

RECYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS

The Township of Whitewater Region Landfill Site located at 990 Kohlsmith Road is now a collection point where residents can bring their used, broken or unwanted electronic equipment for reuse and recycling.

The “Do What You Can” program is funded by fees paid to the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) by manufacturers and importers of electronics in Ontario.  For more information about this program visit www.dowhatyoucan.ca/electronics.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE PROGRAM

 

The Township offers two Mobile Hazardous Waste Events each year – once in the Spring and once in the Fall. Please watch the local newspapers, the municipal newsletter (included with the final tax bill) and this website for further information about this event once it has been scheduled.

 

ONTARIO TIRE STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM

The Ontario Tire Stewardship Program was launched on September 1st, 2009 to divert scrap tires away from burning and landfilling and instead, to be reduced, reused and recycled.  The Township’s Landfill Site located at 990 Kohlsmith Road is now a registered collection site and residents can drop off tires at this location free of charge.  Under the Ontario Tire Stewardship Program, the Township receives free pick-up of the scrap tires from a registered tire collector/recycler and funding to assist with the costs of the program.
