WATER LEVEL INFORMATION March 26, 2012

Due to the unseasonably warm weather we have experienced recently, the snow received this winter is melting quickly.  This could cause the water levels in local rivers, streams and lakes to rise which could result in localized minor flooding.  For further information, residents can monitor the water levels along the Ottawa River by visiting the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board’s website (www.ottawariver.ca).  The Ministry of Natural Resources also provides updates on potential flood conditions and offers advice on how to prepare against flooding on their website (www.mnr.gov.on.ca).

All residents are reminded that as the snow melts and water levels rise, rivers, lakes and streams become very dangerous.  All persons, including pets, should safely stay away from riverbanks and all bodies of water.

NEW WATER and SEWER RATES for 2012 March 8, 2012

At the Council Meeting held on Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 By-Law Number 12-03-531 was passed adopting new water and sewer rates for the residents of Cobden, Beachburg and Haley Townsite.

Over a year ago, the Township of Whitewater Region engaged the services of Watson and Associates to help address the financial needs of the water and sewer systems.  Information was collected and used to develop a forecast of water and sewer rates that will pay for current and future operating, financing and capital costs.

The new water rates adopted by Council are based on shared operating costs with capital costs separated by area.  Cobden, Beachburg and Haley Townsite each have different water rates and Cobden sewer has its own separate rate.

As part of this process, a thorough review of the existing rate structure was also completed.  Under the old system, the rate structure was different between the three locations.  In an effort to standardize the rate structure across all water and sewer systems, the following rate categories were created:

RESIDENTIAL
SMALL COMMERCIAL
MEDIUM COMMERCIAL
HIGH COMMERCIAL
MULTI RESIDENTIAL (second and subsequent units)

These rate categories have now been applied to all water and sewer accounts based on definitions established during the review process.
