Looking for Library Board Members

JOIN THE WHITEWATER REGION PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR ITS 2026-2030 TERM

The Whitewater Region Public Library Board is the governing body of the Whitewater Region Public Library.  The Board follows the Ontario Public Libraries Act and members are appointed by Council following the application process.

The Board is responsible for:
Advocating for the Library;
Evaluating the CEO, who oversees the daily operations of the Library;
Developing and reviewing the Library's Strategic Plan;
Creating and revising policies required for the operation of the Library; and
Developing and overseeing the Library's budget.

Who Can Be a Board Member?
The Ontario Public Libraries Act mandates that board members must be:
At least 18 years of age;
A Canadian citizen;
A resident of the municipality or of a contracting municipality; and
Not employed by the municipality.

Whitewater Region Public Library has a minimum of five and a maximum of nine members, including one to two Council members.

What is the time commitment?
Meetings are monthly with the exception of July, August and December.  Meetings are approximately two hours and occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm.  Meetings take place at the Cobden Branch, with a virtual option available for those who are unable to attend in-person.

From time-to-time, special meetings of the Board may be called.  Board members serve for four years, concurrent with the Township of Whitewater Region Council term.

Board members also participate in outreach and advocacy events such as local fairs, Cobden Christmas Market, Trivia Night, Book Sales and more.

How Do I Join?
Prior to the municipal election, the Township of Whitewater Region will advertise Board vacancies.  Interested parties can email the Chief Administrative Officer of the Township with an expression of interest.

Board members are appointed by the newly elected Council at its first meeting following the election.
